Fan & Slash Fiction

I'm blogging this live during a great presentation by Sharon Cumberland from Seattle University - it's part of a speaker series that I help organize on society and technology.

Fascinating stuff - 90% of fan fiction writers are women, so Cumberland looks at fan fiction as a form of cultural prodcution outside of patriarchal control. Best point so far: contrast the derogatory image of the hysterical female fan (think bobbysoxers) versus the high regard for male sports fans. Yet both are merely expressing enthusiasm and expertise for a specific interest area.

And, with sports hooliganism you actually can get violence and negative efects, which you don't quite see from fan fiction writers and their conventions...
